The alterations in the tissues from the eyelids and their surrounding areas can be treated with various methods, both surgical and nonsurgical. The latter consist of the implementation of hyaluronic acid injections or even the implementation of botulinum toxin, which is used to reduce the strength of the muscles that cause wrinkles in the upper third of the face. Besides, nowadays there is another method that consists of autologous plasma, which is used for wrinkle refilling in these same areas.

However, when there is excessive skin, flaccidity or wrinkles in the eyelids, as well as fat bags surrounding both upper and lower eyelids, it is necessary to perform a blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery). This procedure can be performed even in young women who already present these alterations, which make them have an appearance of sadness, exhaustion or distress. These kinds of looks are corrected through the careful performance of eyelid surgery, which is an outpatient procedure that lasts I hour and a half and is carried out under local anesthesia.

I state "careful" because this is actually a procedure that is relatively easy to perform. A surgeon needs to master a precise surgical technique to prevent asymmetry between one eye and the other or the change in their shape. This is one of the most common fears in people who wish to have this kind of procedure and it is a consequence of the lack of experience that some surgeons have in handling the different alterations present in the eyelids sometimes.

Blepharoplasty can be performed either through an external incision or through a conjunctival incision, which is made in the internal part of the eyelid. This decision depends on the degree of flaccidity in the patient's skin, since its bad quality, if there is any, could make the eyelids more wrinkled. In other words, the results would be completely opposite to the ones expected; the purpose of eliminating wrinkles and bags would not have any good results even when performing a surgery that does not require any stitches. Whatever the incision chosen, eyelid surgery does not require a long recovery time, since it is painless in its postoperatory time. If there are any sutures remaining from the procedure, these will be removed after three days and after a month the scars will vanish completely. The care instructions given are more for handling the presence of bruises and swelling, which will also disappear within 8 days if all the recommendations are followed properly.

Eyelid surgery can be coupled with eyebrow lifting, another procedure that also provides great outcomes and which I will describe in detail in upcoming articles.

Last, but not least, when making the decision of changing the aspect of eyelids and their surrounding tissues, the most important matter is to have a good consultancy. Thus, the patient will be able to choose the best surgical or non surgical method according to the present alterations in her body. If a blepharoplasty is needed it is preferable to choose a professional physician with the sufficient experience in these procedures, to avoid unpleasant outcomes.
